拉罗汤加是库克群岛诸岛中人口最多的岛也是太平洋中南部库克群岛最大岛屿。椭圆形火山岛，珊瑚礁环绕，中部为山地，四周为平原。土壤肥沃，盛产柑橘等热带、亚热带水果。北岸中部的阿瓦鲁阿是库克群岛的首府和主要港口。附近的阿瓦提乌是另一港口。西北端尼卡奥有国际机场和环岛公路。
